About the Mazda Bongo Campervan

The Mazda Bongo was the original Japanese conversion van. It’s been popular for over 40 years across the world as it’s a well specified van and one that’s stood the test of time. First introduced in 1966, it was Mazda’s original small van. While initially the van struggled in international markets due to stricter emissions standards introduced in major markets, as well as the JDM market, soon after the Mazda Bongo launched, the second generation had greater success which has long continued.

The Mazda Bongo Friendee was the campervan version of the original Bongo and was released in 1995. Some had factory pop-tops, some had Mazda own campervan kitchens. In 2001, a facelift version was introduced, and this has become the version most commonly seen on our roads today.
